MUSACK is a 501c3 charity (musack.org) -- it started on Nantucket Island -- the summer is fantastic there but the winter is long and very isolated with nothing open. The school and winter population is very working class, mostly service industry families and often now hailing from places as far flung as Bulgaria, Ecuador, and Jamaica – their kids find themselves in a strange place with few means. SOO MUSACK's mission is to arm them all (especially the at-risk and under-privileged) with guitars and lessons. We also sponsor off island cultural exchanges to fight off the claustrophobia and have established a scholarship fund to send kids to college. Now in it’s 5th year, Musack has expanded to Los Angeles and set up shop in an underserved El Salvadorean neighborhood – setting up a guitar lab and beginning to arm the kids with guitars as a way to tell their stories and hopefully stay out of gangs and trouble.
